Movies, ‘Little Joe Review: This Flower Can Dispense Joy, but It Has Demands Jessica Hausners new sci-fi film about a flower engineered to release a potent antidepressant evokes “Invasion of the Body Snatchers. ” Credit. Magnolia Pictures In a spotless laboratory-cum-greenhouse, dozens of blazing red plants thrive under the attentive eyes of a few folks in pale blue coats. The plants are flowers, but they dont have petals; from their stems bloom long, undulating, spear-like tendrils. The flowers developer, Alice, explains to her colleagues at Plantworks — a company preparing new product s for an upcoming market fair — that this special plant needs special care. One must not just water it, but talk to it. In return, its pollen will release a potent antidepressant. The flower will literally make you happy. Alice, played with vivid restraint by Emily Beecham (her performance earned her the best actress award at Cannes this year) brings a flower to her son, Joe (Kit Connor) after whom shes named the plant. In a purple-lit room in their home, they look at Little Joe with awe. But Alice doesnt quite know how to deal with her son when the plants happiness-dispensing starts to change him. Directed by the Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner with a detachment more professorial than wry, “Little Joe” manages to exert a peculiar pull in spite of being constructed with material youve likely seen elsewhere. Theres the strange stuff that happens at Plantworks, for instance, like the friendly dog who inadvertently spends the night in the flower lab and emerges unfriendly. Around that time, Alices colleague, Chris ( Ben Whishaw) expresses romantic feelings for Alice, but then becomes more concerned with the well-being of Little Joe. Later, Alice faces accusations of ignoring virus protocols in developing the plant, but before she can even get defensive about it, the issue is shrugged off. Hmm. The movies story line, concocted by Hausner and Géraldine Bajard, recalls that of the much-remade classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers, ” in which emotional humans are replaced by unfeeling drones hatched from pods. The droll joke of “Little Joe” is that it frequently looks and feel like a “Snatchers” reboot as directed by a pod person. The tone is locked in with Alices own coolness. Hausner frequently frames shots with Kubrick-evoking one-point perspective. She uses lenses that make the distances between two people sitting in an ordinary-size room look enormous. The deliberateness of the styling makes the storys predictability feel more like inexorability. The events may be familiar, but their stagings are unusual and often uncanny. The novelist Vladimir Nabokov once mocked professors, and, by extension, other critical types, who approached art works with the question: “What is the guy trying to say? ” “Little Joe” frequently invites the question for the deliberate purpose of resisting any answers. Is the movie a satire on Western societys arguable overreliance on psychotropic drugs? Maybe. But the film also suggests a potentially metaphysical dimension. “Who can prove the genuineness of our feelings? Moreover, who cares? ” one character asks when disputing the idea that Little Joes control over its owners is something to be frightened of. When such concerns of authenticity are put aside, what is our ideation of humanity left with? Thats a scary thought. Little Joe Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 45 minutes.

Art direction/Colors: Highlight of the film.
Soundtrack: Interesting at first, terribly loud/trebly, repetitive and annoying as time goes on.
Script: As i pointed out, there's a lack of a coherent/satisfying ending to the film. I mean, if you missed the final 5 minutes, you'd have missed nothing at all. The thing is, you can almost tell that this would be the case. Far too many movies these days fail to translate a great idea into a decent all round film. They forget that the way you leave audiences is how they tend to remember the film. In 2019, if a viewer invests 2 hours into your artsy experiment, you better have a climax of some sorts. Lazy filmmaking ends up ruining an otherwise memorable albeit eerie movie.

He has little memory of his beloved mother, and was under five when she died in a horsing accident, one he would mirror years later when his horse Cochise falls at the ranch. Little Joe received his nickname because compared to his brother, Hoss, he was little in comparison. Joe likes playing checkers and poker, he also likes making bets that end up with hilarious results. Adolfs bizarre adventure: Facist tendencies. I was born and grew in northern México, at Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, to be precise. I didnt attend to English school and the little words I know are not enough to express my concept about this unique musician and his band. So, I will do it in Spanish: En mi personal opinión, el mérito y el éxito de Little Joe y La Familia tiene varias razones; 1. Ω.

The first rocket designed solely for manned spacecraft qualifications, Little Joe was also one of the pioneer operational launch vehicles using the rocket cluster principle. The Little Joe name has been attributed to Maxime Faget at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He based the name on four large fins which reminded him of a slang term for a roll of four in craps. [1] A successor, Little Joe II, was used for flight testing of the Apollo launch escape system from 1963-1966. Background [ edit] When NASA needed a booster for the Mercury manned space program, the agency found that the Atlas rockets would cost approximately 2. 5 million each and that even the Redstone would cost about 1 million per launch. The managers of the Mercury program recognized that the numerous early test flights would have to be accomplished by a far less expensive booster system. As it turned out, the Little Joe rocket NASA designed cost about 200, 000 each. In January 1958, Max Faget and Paul Purser had worked out in considerable detail on paper how to cluster four of the solid-fuel Sergeant rockets, in standard use at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, to boost a manned nose cone above the stratosphere. Faget's short-lived "High Ride" proposal had suffered from comparisons with "Project Adam" at that time, but in August 1958 William Bland and Ronald Kolenkiewicz had returned to their preliminary designs for a cheap cluster of solid rockets to boost full-scale and full-weight model capsules above the atmosphere. As drop tests of boilerplate capsules provided new aerodynamic data on the dynamic stability of the configuration in free-fall, the need for comparable data on the powered phase quickly became apparent. So in October 1958, a NASA team prepared new engineering layouts and estimates for the mechanical design of the booster structure and a suitable launcher. As the blueprints for this cluster of four rockets began to emerge from their drawing boards, the designers' nickname for their project gradually was adopted. Since their first cross-section drawings showed four holes, they called the project "Little Joe. from the craps throw of a double deuce on the dice. [3] Although four smaller circles were added later to represent the addition of Recruit rocket motors, the original name stuck. The appearance on engineering drawings of the four large stabilizing fins protruding from its airframe also helped to perpetuate the name Little Joe had acquired. The primary purpose of this relatively small and simple booster system was to save money—by allowing numerous test flights to qualify various solutions to the myriad problems associated with the development of manned space flight, especially the problem of escaping from an explosion at or during launch. Capsule aerodynamics under actual reentry conditions was another primary concern. To gain this kind of experience as soon as possible, its designers had to keep the clustered booster simple in concept; it should use solid fuel and existing proven equipment whenever possible, and should be free of any electronic guidance and control systems. The designers made the Little Joe booster assembly to approximate the same performance that the Army's Redstone booster would have with the capsule payload. But in addition to being flexible enough to perform a variety of missions, Little Joe could be made for about one-fifth the basic cost of the Redstone, would have much lower operating costs, and could be developed and delivered with much less time and effort. And, unlike the larger launch vehicles, Little Joe could be shot from the existing facilities at Wallops Island. Launch vehicle development [ edit] Twelve companies responded during November 1958 to the invitations for bids to construct the airframe of Little Joe. The technical evaluation of these proposals was carried on in much the same manner as for the spacecraft, except that Langley Research Center itself carried the bulk of the administrative load. The Missile Division of North American Aviation won the contract on December 29, 1958; and began work immediately in Downey, California, on its order for seven booster airframes and one mobile launcher. The primary mission objectives for Little Joe as seen in late 1958 (in addition to studying the capsule dynamics at progressively higher altitudes) were to test the capsule escape system at maximum dynamic pressure, to qualify the parachute system, and to verify search and retrieval methods. But since each group of specialists at work on the project sought to acquire firm empirical data as soon as possible, more exact priorities had to be established. The first flights were to secure measurements of inflight and impact forces on the capsule; later flights were to measure critical parameters at the progressively higher altitudes of 20, 000, 250, 000, and 500, 000 feet (6, 75, and 150 km. The minimum aims of each Little Joe shot could be supplemented from time to time with studies of noise levels, heat and pressure loads, heat shield separation, and the behavior of animal riders, so long as the measurements could be accomplished with minimum telemetry. Since all the capsules boosted by the Little Joe rockets were expected to be recovered, onboard recording techniques would also contribute to the simplicity of the system. The first of only two booster systems designed specifically and solely for manned capsule qualifications, Little Joe was also one of the pioneer operational launch vehicles using the rocket cluster principle. Since the four modified Sergeants (called either Castor or Pollux rockets, depending upon modification) and four supplemental Recruit rockets were arranged to fire in various sequences, the takeoff thrust varied greatly, but maximum design thrust was almost 230, 000 pounds (1, 020 kilonewtons. Theoretically enough to lift a spacecraft of about 4, 000 pounds (1, 800 kg) on a ballistic path over 100 miles (160 km) high, the push of these clustered main engines should simulate the takeoff profile in the environment that the manned Atlas would experience. Furthermore, the additional powerful explosive pull of the tractor-rocket escape system could be demonstrated under the most severe takeoff conditions imaginable. The engineers who mothered Little Joe to maturity knew it was not much to look at, but they hoped that their ungainly rocket would prove the legitimacy of most of the ballistic capsule design concepts, thereby earning its own honor. A successor, Little Joe II, would later be used for flight testing of the Apollo crew escape system. Flights [ edit] As of 21 January 1960, the Little Joe series of five actual and attempted flights had expended four of the six test boosters North American had made for NASA and five prototype capsules made in the Langley shops. The primary test objectives for these solid-fuel-boosted models were an integral part of the development flight program conducted within NASA by the Space Task Group, with Langley and Wallops support. Now only two Little Joe boosters remained for the qualification flight tests. North American had manufactured seven Little Joe airframes, but one of these had been retained at the plant in Downey, California, for static loading tests. STG ordered the refurbishment of this seventh airframe so as to have three Little Joe boosters for the qualification flight program. The success of Little Joe 1B in January 1960 meant that the next flight, the sixth, to be known as Little Joe 5, would be the first to fly a real Mercury capsule from the McDonnell production line. In passing from development flight tests with boilerplate models to qualification flight tests with the "real McDonnell" capsule, the Space Task Group moved further away from research into the development and toward operations. Mission numbering [ edit] The official Mercury mission numbering designation was a two-letter designation that corresponded to the launch vehicle type, followed by a dash then a digit indicating the particular set of flight objectives, and an optional letter used to distinguish further flights to accomplish those objectives. So the official designation for the first Little Joe flight was "LJ-1. Flights did not occur in numeric sequence as the project schedule was adapted as it progressed. The actual flight order was: Specifications [ edit] Little Joe I Thrust: 235, 000 lbf (1, 044 kN) Length: 15. 2 m Diameter: 2. 03 m Fin Span: 6. 5 m Weight: 28, 000 lb (12, 700 kg) Fuel: Solid Burn Time: 40 s Recruit rocket (Thiokol XM19) Thrust: 37, 500 lbf (167 kN) Length: 2. 7 m Diameter: 0. 23 m Weight: 350 lb (159 kg) Burn Time: 1. 53 s Castor rocket (Thiokol XM33) Thrust: 58, 200 lbf (259 kN) Length: 6. 04 m Diameter: 0. 79 m Weight: 9, 753 lb (4, 424 kg) Burn Time: 37 s See also [ edit] Big Joe Little Joe II Boilerplate (spaceflight) References [ edit] External links [ edit] NASA - This New Ocean: A History of Project Mercury NASA Report: Performance characteristics of the Little Joe launch vehicle - September 1962 Little Joe DVD.

Posted on Thursday, December 5th, 2019 by Maybe its the success of TVs Black Mirror, maybe its just the general state of the world, but it feels a bit like we need our high-concept science fiction delivered to us in purely dystopian form. Technological advances are inherently suspicious, the conventional wisdom seems to suggest. Our humanity alone might not be enough to save us. Its oddly comforting, strange as it sounds, to come across a film like Jessica Hausners Little Joe, which takes the form of an Invasion of the Body Snatchers -style horror film but dares to suggest that perhaps the things we fear arent quite as ominous as they appear. Thats not to say that Hausner somehow brushes off the threat of the titular genetically engineered flower, a little red-budded menace designed to emit the hormone associated with a mother loving her child – but may also be shifting the behaviors of those exposed to it in borderline imperceptible ways. Its nothing dramatic. People do not undergo some kind of dramatic physical transformation or act substantially different. Theres just something … off. The only people who can really notice the affectation are those closest to supposedly changed parties. (Added that adverb expressing doubt because Hausner never truly confirms that Little Joe does, in fact, do the things that the characters fear. ) Hausners subtle paranoia and eerie precision allow Little Joe to strike that raw nerve of unease and dread like the best speculative fiction can. Would we even notice if the people we loved or saw frequently began to change at the behest of an inhuman influence? What if there is change we cannot undo with the sheer force of the human will? We feel it generally because the characters in the film, particularly Emily Beechams protagonist Alice, feel this terror so acutely. As both a single mother and a scientist, Alice feels devoted to both her teenage son Joe (Kit Connor) and her lab work engineering the floral creation to bring artificial happiness. But when the plant begins its speculative reign of terror, shes forced to grapple with a terrifying reality. The two things she cultivates most carefully may be acting in ways that she can no longer control. Though Alice might lose her grip on the world around her, Hausner remains steady in her guidance of the film. Its clear from the opening moments of Little Joe that were in the hands of a master craftswoman, an aesthetic practitioner of exceptional rigor. Her house style featuring austere performance work and meticulous composition lends an unsettling aura to a story that so easily could play in an apocalyptic register. She threads the needle delicately between making her actors appear choreographed and not robotic, just as she builds a world that feels artificial without ever giving off a whiff of sterility. Hausners directorial hand is palpable in every frame of Little Joe, be it the screeching whistle noise emitted by the plants, the grace of her cameras slow pushes or the ironic awkwardness of her still shots. Yet for how apparent her constant decision-making is throughout the film, she leaves one big choice to the audience: what to make of it all. Unlike her construction of the work, Hausner leaves the film on a note of remarkable ambiguity (though certainly not ambivalence. She raises important questions about technology and science, parenting and selfhood, autonomy and control. Or happiness and business, as a song bellows over the ending credits makes viewers contemplate. Shes not an entirely dispassionate observer and makes her feelings known where she cannot stay silent, particularly when it comes to the false choices that society forces working mothers to make. But beyond that? The monster may not even be that monstrous. The hero might not be particularly heroic. Theres no sermonizing in sight to set our moral guideposts, nor is their soapbox blustering to guide our feelings towards a villain. Were left with ourselves and our own feelings at the end of Little Joe, set adrift to ponder if were really all that horrified by the human drama in a film that takes the form of a horror flick. /Film Rating: 8 out of 10 Cool Posts From Around the Web.

It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Emily Beecham won the award for Best Actress. [3] 4] Beecham stars as Alice Woodard, a plant breeder and single mother who creates "Little Joe" a plant that gives its caretakers joy. Plot [ edit] Alice Woodard ( Emily Beecham) is a plant breeder who works in a lab that focuses on creating new strains of flowers. While her colleague Bella ( Kerry Fox) is failing at creating a hardy plant that will survive even weeks of undernourishment and neglect, Alice and her team have successfully created a flower that requires more care than an ordinary plant but which makes their owners happy. Alice decides to name the plants "Little Joe" in honour of her son and smuggles out one of the plants for him. The Little Joes begin to aggressively pollinate which Alice theorizes is because she has made them sterile. The same day Bella's dog, Bello, goes missing. Chris ( Ben Whishaw) goes looking for him and accidentally inhales some of the pollen. Later on he takes Alice out and despite her obvious reluctance attempts to kiss her twice. The following day Bella finds Bello in the lab. He attacks her and she insists that he has changed. Chris later tells Alice that Bella is mentally ill and had previously attempted suicide before being forced on a year long sabbatical, returning only shortly before Alice began working at the lab. Alice later learns that Bella had Bello put down. Bella tells Alice that the changes to Bello were due to the plant. Alice's son is accidentally pollinated by the plant and begins to act strangely, sneaking his classmate Selma, into the lab and stealing a Little Joe. He later tells Alice that he is considering moving in with his father, Ivan. Bothered by her son's behaviour Alice begins to examine test footage of subjects who have been exposed to the pollen. In every case their family members report that they are acting strangely and have seemed to change since the pollen test. However just as Alice begins to believe Bella's suspicions, Bella is exposed to the pollen herself and dismisses her previous beliefs as paranoia due to her mental issues. Joe reveals that he and Selma stole the plant in order to pollinate Ivan confirming Alice's suspicions her plant carries a virus, especially as she has used unorthodox methods to create Little Joe. However this turns out to be a joke as Chris previously talked to Joe about Alice's concerns. At work Bella reveals that she never inhaled the pollen and was only pretending to be happy in order to blend in with the others; she later tries to commit suicide. After Alice's boss dismisses her concerns she takes matters into her own hands and decides to kill the Little Joes before they are commercialized, lowering the temperature in the lab. She is stopped by Chris who, in trying to prevent her from harming the plant knocks her out on the floor of the lab, exposing her to the plant pollen. Later Alice learns that Little Joe has been nominated for an award meaning that the plant will be sold worldwide. When Chris apologizes for hitting her she kisses him, and later dismisses her concerns as paranoia. She allows Joe to move in with his father and starts a new, happier life with her own Little Joe. What parents need to know Parents need to know that Little Joe is a sci-fi drama about a woman named Alice ( Emily Beecham) who struggles to balance her time between work and her teen son, Joe (Kit Connor. It plays off of the idea that when someone creates something. like a work project. it becomes their "baby. Here, Alice genetically engineers plants and sees her promising strain of flowers as her other child, who competes for her attention against her actual son. The story may stress out kids unnecessarily because ( spoiler alert) it suggests that parents do love their work more than their children. In LITTLE JOE, botanist Alice ( Emily Beecham) has genetically engineered a breed of flowers to trigger feelings of happiness. As her relationship with her teen son, Joe (Kit Connor) starts to strain, Alice brings home a cutting for him to nurture. but is unsettled by the changes she soon sees in his behavior. Is it any good? The conclusion of this sci-fi drama could make for fairly uncomfortable family viewing. It swims in the waters of a mother's work-life balance and where she might prefer to spend her time, examining whether her love for her child is authentic. Outside of the parent-child dynamic, Little Joe is based on a clever idea that has an application in today's world. It explores the idea that people could transform into a muted version of themselves after smelling a happy plant, an astute analogy to antidepressants. The movie's story, pacing, and mood are like a dull hum, but just as your eyes start to feel heavy, youre awakened by the screeching score. That's not an overstatement: To suggest impending doom, the music is in a high-pitched tone that's guaranteed to make dogs howl in pain, alternated with a conga drum and recorder score (yes, recorder. Visually, every scene is awash in Pantone-popping shades that must have been chosen off of a paint color deck; they harmonize, and yet it's too much all at once. And the movie's idea feels original, until you realize it's a cliché: An inanimate object develops artificial intelligence that threatens humanity! All of that said, if the film's goal is to disturb viewers by rubbing together notions of beauty and horror, then it succeeds. Talk to your kids about...
